Hip Joint Flashcards
What covers the head of the femur?
Articular cartilage
Hip joint
Ball and socket synovial joint - multiaxial
Acetabular labrum
Labrum of the hip - fibrocartilaginous
Hip joint ligamental reinforcement
Anterior and superiorly - iliofemoral ligament
Inferiorly and anteriorly - pubofemoral ligament
Posteriorly - ischiofemoral ligament
Iliofemoral ligament
Attaches to the AIIS and acetabular rim proximally and the intertrochanteric line distally - prevents hyperextension of the hip joint during standing
Pubofemoral ligament
Tightens during extension and abduction of the hip joint and prevents overabduction of the hip joint
Ischiofemoral ligament
Weak ligament
Hip movements
Flexion, extension, ADD, ABD, IR, ER, and circumduction
Blood supply of the hip joint
- Medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries - branches of profunda femoris artery
- Artery to the head of femur - branch of the obturator artery
Nerve supply of the hip joint
- Femoral nerve
- Obturator nerve
- Superior gluteal nerve
- Nerve to quadratus femoris
