The vascular system Flashcards
What are the four factors that make up the vascular system?
Blood
Vessels
Vascular shunt mechanism
Control of blood disilation
What are the 3 functions of blood?
Transportation
Protection
Homeostasis
What does the blood transport around?
CO2, 02, Nutrients
Hormones and enzymes
How does the blood provide protection?
Immune system
clotting
What does homeostasis mean?
Wanting a stable blood temperature and blood acidity
How does blood maintain a stable enviroment?
To decrease temperature, blood runs closer to the skin And gets more 02, white increases heart and gets rid of lactic acid
What 4 things make the blood structure?
Red blood cells
white blood cells
Platelets
plasma
What are the use for red blood cells?
To carry O2 for myaglobin and has a large surface area
What is the purpose of white blood cells?
Library of diseases, releases anti bodies
what are job of plateletes ?
To aid clotting aka scabs
What is the purpose of plasma?
To carry h2O and salts (when sweating levels decrease)
What is system of the vessels?
Heart Artery's Arterioles Capillaries Venules Veins Repeat
What are the factors of the veins?
Low pressure
Large Luma
carry blood to heart valves
What are the factors of the artery’s?
Carry blood away from heart
Small lumen
think wall to withstand blood pressure
what are the factor of the capillaries?
Gaseous exchange 1 cell thick large surface area Small diffusion pathway slow blood flow
What is the vascular shunt mechanism?
redirection of blood by opening and closing of arterioles
what are the main mechanisms of vascular shunt mechanism?
Vasoconstriction
Vasodialataion
What is Vasoconstriction?
Narrowing of luman to decrease blood flow to the digestive system (Liver, intestine)
What is vasodilation?
Opening of luman to increase blood flow to working muscles
What do pre capillary sphincters do ?
Control of capillary beds, for example opening at working muscles and closing at digestive system
Does the brain always need the same amount of blood?
yes
What changes in the body occur during exercise?
Lactic acid movement CO2 temprature Pressure
What receptors pick up the changes in the body?
Proprioceptors- movement
Baroreceptors-pressure
Chemoreceptors- PH levels
Thermoreceptors- temperature
What do the receptors tell?
The brain (medulla Oblangata)
What does the brain tell?
the vasomotor control centre
What nerve then carries the message?
SYMPATHETIC NERVE
What does the nerve tell the vascular system to do?
To vasconstrict or Vasoldialate
