what is prejudice?
opinion based on inaccurate facts, often a dislike of people due to race, religion or gender
what is discrimination?
unfair treatment of a person
what is social exclusion?
when certain sections of society are left out of mainstream
what is inclusiveness?
recognize diversity of needs and does not necessarily mean integration or segregation
what barriers to gender?
roles - childcare, lack of time as working, economic lower independent income
eteem- myths about sports for certain genders, poor body image, restrictions on some race & religion
less opportunity - fewer female clubs
what barriers may account for lower participation in women ?
stereotyping -may believe that women should look after children
sport as a male preserve- views that its not a women place to play
less resources/ lower funding - fewer female clubs, less media coverage, less role models, less sponsorship, less prize money
less time available- cannot train as much
why is there lower participation among ethnic minorities?
fear of discrimination not encouraged conflict with religious customs lack of role models stereotyping
what solutions are there for lower p in ethnic minorities ?
sensitive sports policies raise awareness of racial inequalities greater media coverage improve skill level and positive attitudes challenges stereotypical thinking
