The Skeleton And Movement Flashcards
What does the bone consist of?
Cells ( the living part ) and calcium compounds ( the non living part )
What is the function of the skeleton?
Support , protection and movement
What are ligaments?
Ligaments are tough , elastic fibres that hold the bones togther
What are fused joints?
These are immovable or fixed joints
What are ball and socket joints?
These allow movement in all directions
What are hinge joints ?
These allow movement in one plane only
What is the function of the synovial fluid ?
Lubricates the joints and allows the bones to move easily
What is the function of the cartilage?
It acts as a shock absorber between bones and prevents them rubbing off each other
What is a joint?
A joint is where bones meet
What do moveable joints contain?
They contain synovial fluid
What is the function of the tendons
Tendons join muscle to muscle
What are antagonistic muscles ?
Antagonistic muscles work in opposite ways to each other ( e.g the biceps and triceps )
Explain how the biceps and triceps are antagonistic muscles
When the bicep contacts , the arm is raised . To lower the arm , the triceps contracts and the biceps relaxes
How does the skeleton carry out the function of support?
It is the framework for the body . It supports the body and gives it shape.
How does the skeleton carry out he function of protection?
The skeleton protects important organs in the body. The skull protects the brain and the ribs protect the heart and lungs.
