The Circulation System Flashcards
Give the function of the red blood cells
They contain haemoglobin which carrys oxygen
Name the 3 components of blood
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
Give the function of the white blood cells .
They protect the body against disease
Give the function of platelets
They cause the blood to clot
Describe the two functions of the blood
1 . TRANSPORT
The blood transports food molecules , oxygen and hormones around the body .
- DEFENCE AGAINST DISEASE
White blood cells make antibodies which kill bacteria , platelets help the blood to clot and white blood cells can eat up bacteria ( engulf)
What substances are dissolved in the plasma ?
Glucose , amino acids , wastes , hormones and carbon dioxide
Name the 3 types of blood vessels and give their functions
Arteries - carry blood away from the heart
Veins - carry blood back to the heart
Capillaries - link the arteries and veins
Why is the wall of the left side of the heart thicker than the wall of the right side ?
The left side of the heart has to pump blood all around the body
Why is blood considered a tissue ?
It has a group of cells working together
Give the structural differences between arteries and veins
The Artery has thick muscle walls , a narrow lumen and no valves.
The vein has thinner walls , a large lumen and has valves
Why do arteries have much thicker walls than veins ?
Arteries have thick walls to resist pressure and veins have thin walls as the pressure is much less.
Show the passage of blood through the heart
Body > vena cava > right atrium > valves > right ventricle > pulmonary artery > lungs > pulmonary vein > right atrium > left ventricle > aorta > body
