What is a sweep net and describe how is it used
A sweep net is a net used to sweep through long grass , hedges and the air to collect insects
What is a pooter and describe how it is used
A pooter is a jar with two rubber tubes attached. It is used to suck up insects into the collecting jar. A piece of gauze on the end of one tube ensures the insect is not accidentally swallowed. You suck on the tube with the gauze filter on the end and insects get sucked in at the other tube
What is a pitfall trap and describe how it is used
The pitfall trap is a jam jar dug into the ground and levelled with the surface covered with a stone or slate. You leave the trap overnight and small , crawling animals will be collected. If you put alcohol in the trap . It will kill them , preventing them from eating eachother
What is a quadrant and describe how it is used
A quadrat is used to estimate the number of plants present in a habitat . It is a wooden frame. You throw a pen over your shoulder and wherever the pen lands, that is where you’d place the quadrat. This makes sure the quadrat is placed on the ground at random . You then name each plant present inside the quadrat and record your results after 10 throws
What is a transect and describe how a line transect is used.
A line transect is used to show the changes in the numbers of different types of plants from one part of the habitat to another. A line transect is a piece of string . You mark with knots at regular intervals . You stretch between two stakes across the boundary from one shaded area to the well lit area. You name each plant under each knot and then record also how the plant types change from one area to another
