Animal And Plant Cells Flashcards
What is cytoplasm ?
Watery fluid in which other structures are suspended
What is a cell membrane ?
Thin like structure that holds the cell together and controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is the nucleus ?
Controls the cell actives and how the cells divide to form new cells
What are the small vacuoles ?
Temporary storage of food and waste
What are chloroplasts ?
They contain chlorophyll which plants use to make their own food
What is the cell wall?
It supports the plant cell so the whole plant will not collapse
What is the large vacuole ?
It stores water , sugar and wastes
What are the difference between animal cells and plant cells
Animal cells don’t have a cell wall , they don’t have chloroplasts and they have small temporary vacuoles not a large vacuole in the centre
What is the function of the stage ?
The stage is where you place the slide
What is the function of the focus knob ?
It moves the objective lens up and down in order to focus the object you are looking at
Describe how you would examine plant cells (onion)
- Place a small piece on onion on a slide , add 3 drops of water and cover with a cover slip
- Make sure the onion skin is flat and not folded over
- Apply iodine stain to the sample
Describe how you would examine animal cells ( human cheek cells )
- Rub a clean figure against the inside of your cheek
- Smear this unto a clean slide , prepare the slide
- Apply methylene blue stain to the sample
What is the function of muscle cells ?
Allow movement
What is the function of red blood cells?
They carry oxygen
What is the function of white blood cells ?
Defend against disease
