Plants Flashcards
What is the transpiration stream ?
The transpiration stream is the flow of water from the roots to stem to leaves
What is the meaning of the term transpiration ?
Transpiration is the loss of water vapour from the leaves of a plant
What are the functions of tranpiration?
1) to carry water to the leaves for photosynthesis.
2) to carry minerals up from the roots to the leaves.
3) to cool the plant by water evaporation from the leaves.
What is the function of the xylem vessels?
The xylem vessels carry water and minerals up through the plant.
What is the function of the phloem vessels?
The phloem vessels carry food made in the leaves to the rest of the plant.
What is the meaning of the term stomata?
Water is lost through the stomata . These are tiny pores between cells on the undersurface of the leaf.
What is tropism?
A tropism is the growth of a plant in response to a stimulus.
Explain the term phototropism
Phototropism is the growth of a plant stem in response to light . The stem grows towards the light to allow more photosynthesis to take place.
Explain the term geotropism
Geotropism is the growth of the plant’s roots towards the source of gravity. This ensures that the roots grow down into the soil for anchorage , water and minerals
How are plants identified?
Plants are identified by their flowers and leaves
What is the function of the flower?
The flower is for reproduction , it forms the seeds
What is the function of the stem?
The stem supports the leaves and flowers and allows for the transport of materials up and down the plant
What is the function of the root?
The root anchors the plant , absorbs water and minerals from the soul and stores food made in the leaves
What does the shoot of a plant consist of ?
It consists of the stem , leaves , buds and flowers
What is the function of the leaf ?
The lead makes food , loses water vapour , exchanges the gases carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air
