Ecology Flashcards
What is a consumer?
A consumer are all organisms other than green plants , they gain energy by eating producers.
What is the producer and give an example
A producer makes its own food usually from the sun using photosynthesis e.g green plants.
What is a hetbivore?
They only eat green plants
What is an omnivore?
They eat plants and animals
What is a carnivore ?
They only eat animals
What is meant by the term ‘competition’ ?
This happens when plants and animals compete for a limited Resource. Plants compete with each other for light , water , space and minerals. Animals compete for food , shelter , territory and mates
Where does the energy for a food chain come from ?
The sun
What is meant by the term ‘ adaptation’ and give 3 examples
In order to compete successfully , animals and plants are adapted to their environment.
- the dandelion’s root is adapted so that it can take water from a deeper level
- hedgehogs are adapted to their environment by having spiked which prevent them from being eaten.
- blackbirds have a shrill voice and that is an adaptation to its environment as it sings to mark out its territory
What is ecology?
Ecology is the study of the relationships between living things both with one another and with their environment.
What is the environment?
The environment is everything that surrounds an animal or plant .
What is the habitat ?
The place where an animal or plant lives.
What is interdependence ?
Animals and plants depend on each other for food , shelter and pollination.
What are decomposers and give 2 examples
Decomposers are organisms that feed on dead animals and plants. Examples of this would be bacteria and fungi.
Why are decomposers important?
They release the minerals locked up in dead animal and plant material and return them to the soil.
What is the feeding level and what level does a green plant occupy ?
The feeding level is the position an organism has in the food chain. The first feeding level is always occupied by a green plant.
