What is the role of the salivary glands?
They help to moisten and lubricate the food so that it is easier to swallow.
What enzyme is found in the saliva?
Amylase which is responsible for carbohydrate digestion in the mouth.
Where are the minor salivary glands found in the oral cavity?
Along the lips and cheeks and are known as labial and buccal glands.
What is the highly developed buccal gland in the dog and cat?
The zygomatic gland.
Zygomatic glands are only found in what kind of animals?
In carnivores.
Where will the zygomatic glands secrete their substances into?
Into the oral vestibule.
What salivary gland is found in cats, but not in dogs?
Molar glands.
What are the 3 salivary glands that are found in the oral cavity?
The parotid salivary gland.
The mandibular salivary gland.
The sublingual salivary gland.
Where is the parotid salivary gland located?
Just below the auricular cartilage and it opens into the oral vestibule at premolar 4 of the upper jaw.
Where is the mandibular salivary gland located?
At the angle of the mandible and it opens into the oral cavity at the sublingual caruncle.
Where is the sublingual caruncle located?
On both sides of the rostral end of the frenulum linguae.
Which salivary gland produces the most saliva?
The sublingual gland.
What are the 2 parts of the sublingual gland?
The compact monostomatic part.
The diffuse polystomatic part.
What conditions are caused if the salivary glands are ruptured?
Mucoceles or sialoceles.
What are sialoceles?
Stones which block the salivary ducts.
