The Pancreas , Liver and Villi Flashcards
What are the two main functions of the pancreas ?
Exocrine - Helps with digestion
Endocrine - regulates blood sugar
How does the pancreas aid digestion ?
Contains exocrine glands that secrete enzymes for digestion of food
Explain the endocrine function of the pancreas
The pancreas contains islet cells that make and release important hormones into the blood stream to control blood sugar levels.
What are the 2 hormones produced by the pancreas ?
Insulin and glucagon
What does insulin do ?
lowers blood sugar
What does glucagon do?
raises blood sugar
What is bile ?
A yellow brown fluid made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder
What is bile composed of?
Water , salts , bilirubin and fatty acids
What is the function of bile ?
emulsifies fats
What does the liver do ?
Stores vitamins , minerals and glucose and produces bile
Where are villi found ?
Mucosa , small intestines
What is the structure of villi ?
The villi are small projections from the small intestine . Each villi has a network of capillaries and lymph vessels close to the surface
What is the function of villi ?
increase surface area for absorption, transport nutrients to the lumen of the intestine to the capillaries
