The Heart and Blood Flashcards
What do artery’s do?
carry blood away from the heart
What is the function of arterioles ?
Connect arteries to capillaries
What do veins do?
carry blood to the heart
What is the function of venules ?
Carry blood from capillaries to veins
What is the structure of an artery ?
Thick and muscular to handle pressure , have elastin to allow them to stretch , large thick walls
What is the function of the capillaries ?
Link arterioles to venules , allow gaseous exchange
What is the structure of a vein ?
non elastic , has valves , thinner than arteries
What is the structure of a capillary ?
One cell thick , contain fenestrations to allow movement of substances
What is the order of blood flow though the heart ?
vena cava , right atrium , tricuspid valve , right ventricle , pulmonary valve , pulmonary artery , lungs , left atrium , left ventricle , aorta
Why do mammals have a double circulatory system?
To prevent the mixing of deoxygenated and oxygenated blood
What are the 3 layers of tissue within the heart ?
Epicardium , myocardium , endocardium
What is the function of the sinoatrial node (SA Node)
Generates electrical impulses to regulate the heart rate and rhythm
Where is the sinoatrial node located?
In the upper wall of the right atrium
What is the function of the atrioventricular node ? (AV Node)
Sends the electrical impulse to the ventricles so they can contract
Where is the AV node located?
junction of atria and ventricles
