Respiration and The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is respiration?
The process of transferring energy from glucose which goes on in every cell
What are the two types of respiration ?
aerobic and anaerobic
What does the respiratory system consist of ?
Mouth + nose , trachea , bronchi , bronchioles , lungs , alveoli
What happens when you inhale ?
Diaphragm + intercostal muscles - contract
Thorax volume - Increase
Pressure - Decrease
Air flow - In
What happens when you exhale ?
Diaphragm + intercostal muscles - Relax
Thorax volume - decrease
Pressure - Increase
Air flow - Out
Define Gaseous exchange?
the process where oxygen from the air in the alveoli moves into the blood in the air in the capillaries, while carbon dioxide moves from the capillaries into the air in the alveoli.
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining a stable internal environment
What is the Bohr effect?
When respiratory rate increases there is an increase of CO2 in the blood.
CO2 Dissolves into carbonic acid and this lowers the PH in blood which causes hemoglobin to release more O2 enabling muscles to work at the same rate
