Blood Proteins and The Lymphatic system Flashcards
What is hemoglobin?
A protein found in red blood cells . Used to transport oxygen around the body . Removes CO2 as a waste product . Oxyhemoglobin is the oxygenated form.
What does myoglobin do?
Found in the muscle cells , stores O2 , only carries 1 O2 molecule. Oxygen + iron binding protein which release oxygen to muscle cells when levels are low
What is foetal hemoglobin and what does it do ?
Foetal hemoglobin has a higher affinity for O2 and is more efficient .
A foetus cannot use their lungs so relies on oxygen and CO2 via diffusion
What is the lymphatic system?
A secondary transport system that protects and maintains the body by producing and filtering lymph . It also filters fats and extra fluid from the gut.
What is lymph ?
A clear white fluid that contains white blood cells and arises from the drainage of fluid from the blood and surrounding tissue
Where does lymph come from?
Plasma leaks out of the capillaries and bathes the cells with nutrients . The fluid is called tissue fluid once it leaves the capillary. 10% of this seeps though into the lymph vessel to become lymph
What is a lymph node?
collection centers for lymph, all lymph passes through them which filters out damaged cells , cancer cells and foreign bodies
Lymph nodes contain white blood cells
What is the function of the lymphatic system ?
To remove damaged cell , protect against infection
