What is a Primary / Guard hair ?
Each hair has an associated arrector pili muscle , one hair per follicle.
Repels water and protects the skin from sunlight
What is the secondary hair / wool hair ?
Under coat , insulating layer , temperature control of the animal , several wool hairs per follicle
Where are vibrissae found?
Around the nose , face and mouth
Whiskers
Contain nerve endings
What are tylotrich hairs?
Very long guard hairs that act as sensory receptors . Found all over the body
What are cilia / eyelashes ?
Small hairs found around the eyes
What are primary / flight feathers ?
Attached to the wing and tail used for flight
What are secondary feathers ?
Attach to the ulna of the wings and are similar to flight feathers
What are contour feathers ?
Shorter than other feathers and are more flexible . They provide shape and colour to the bird
What do down feathers do ?
provide insulation
What are filoplume feathers?
Sensory feathers that have nerves and roots to assist with flight
What is a bristle feather ?
Located around the face and have nerves in the root sending information to the CNS
