Receptors and Sensory Organs Flashcards
What does the Central nervous system consist of ?
The brain , spinal cord and sensory organs
What do receptors do ?
Detect stimuli and cause a reaction within the body as a result of the stimuli .
What are receptors connected to ?
Sensory neurons
What do changes within the receptors cause ?
Action potentials ( nerve impulses)
What does a chemoreceptor detect ?
Presence of chemicals e.g. food , gustatory receptor
What does a thermoreceptor detect ?
Changes within temperature e.g. somatosensory receptors - skin , vibrissae .
What does a mechanoreceptor detect ?
Mechanical changes within the environment e.g. auditory receptors - hearing
What does a photoreceptor detect ?
Visual changes and forming vision and images
