Athena goes to Sparta and tells telemachus he must go home to Ithaca before the suitors Marry his mother. She warns him of the suitors ambush and tells him how to avoid it. She tells him to go to eumaeus who will speak to Penelope. Telemachus leaves Menelaus and an eagle carrying a goose swoops down beside him. Helen thinks it means Odysseus will come home and take revenge on the suitors.

Telemachus eventually gets to pylos and shows Xenia to theoclymenus. In the hut of eumaeus Odysseus tests the limit of Xenia by saying he’ll leave in the morning. Eumaeus warns him getting involved with the suitors and refers to it as ‘suicide’ eumaeus and Odysseus exchange stories and the next morning telemachus reaches Ithaca. A hawk flies by carrying a dove and theoclymenus interprets it as a favourable sign of strength of Odysseus’ house.
