The Nature of Light Flashcards
Can light waves interfere?
Yes, and the interferences create patterns.
What is Light made of?
Electromagnetic Waves.
Does Light need a medium to travel?
No, it is a form of radiation.
What is a Photon?
A unit or quantum of light.
What is the Speed of Light?
3*10^8m/s.
Do different mediums affect the speed at which light travels?
Light travels fastest in a vacuum and slower through everything else.
What is the energy of Light proportional to?
The energy of light is proportional to frequency
What is Intensity?
The rate at which energy flows through a given space.
What is the Electromagentic Spectrum?
A spectrum that includes all possible kinds of light.
What is Ultraviolet?
A kind of light that comes after our visible violet color, it has more energy and shorter wavelengths than any visible light.
What is an X-Ray?
The kind of light that comes after ultraviolet, it has even more energy and even short wavelengths.
What are Gamma Rays?
The highest energy form of light, it also comes after x-ray as the end of the spectrum and has the shortest wavelengths.
How are X-Rays used in medicine?
They can be used to see bones inside of a person without any surgery.
What is Infrared Light?
The form of light that comes before right before our visible light, it has longer wavelengths and provides warmth.
How is Infrared Light used in normal life?
It used by some machineries and animals to detect heat, and an infrared lamp can keep food warm without having to re-fry it.
