Pollution and Recycling Flashcards
What is Pollution?
An undesirable change in an environment that is harmful to living things.
What are common types of pollution?
Trash pollution and smog.
What causes Air Pollution?
Fires and fossil fuel burning, mainly.
What are the most common gases in Air Pollution?
Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide.
How does more Carbon Dioxide relate to Global Warming?
More Carbon Dioxide causes there to be a surplus and this extra creates a Greenhouse Effect that can warm the Earth.
What is Photochemical Smog?
Smog that looks like a brown haze and can causes breathing problems. Gases like ozone are part of it.
What causes Water Pollution?
Humans, their throwing away of dirt and trash and the coming of pesticides and fertilizers into water.
What is Eutrophication?
An increase of nutrients in an aquatic ecosystem.
Why is Eutrophication bad?
Eutrophication allows algae and other such things to grow extremely quickly, and if a lot grows and a lot of oxygen is taken from the water, fish can die.
What causes Land Pollution?
The extremely high usage of plastic and pesticides are common examples.
Why is Land Pollution so serious?
Plastic can’t be dissolved organically so it just builds up, pesticides are very hard to remove from soil, and eventually we will run out of landfills with which we hold trash.
What is Recycling?
The process of reusing used material such as plastic.
What are some ways of reducing pollution?
Recycling and using less resources.
