Signals and Telecommunication Flashcards
What is a Signal?
Anything that serves as a direction or a warning.
What is a Code?
A set of rules used to interpret data that conveys information.
How do you send Signals over very long distances?
You must convert the signal into an electrical current.
What is a Transducer?
A device that converts a signal from one form to another.
What is Telecommunication?
The sending of visible or audible information by electromagnetic means.
What is an Analog Signal?
A signal whose properties can change continuously in a given range.
What is a Digital Signal?
A signal that can be represented as a sequence of discrete values.
What is Binary?
A type of code that consists of several series of zeros and ones.
What is an Optical Fiber?
A transparent thread of plastic or glass that carries light.
Why is Optical Fiber preferred over metal wiring?
Optical Fiber is much thinner and lighter and can convey more information.
How do Microwave Towers work?
Large dishes are used to pick up and reflect signals towards other towers until the signal meets its final destination.
What is the Satellite Footprint?
The largest area of land where satellite signals can be sent without becoming weak.
What is a Geostationary/Geosynchronous Orbit?
An orbit performed by satellites where the satellite stays at the same spot above earth.
