Magnets and Magnetic Fields Flashcards
What is a Magnet?
A magnetically charged metallic piece that exerts magnetic forces on other objects.
What is a Magnetic Pole?
One of two ends of a magnet, it has opposing magnetic qualities to the other end.
What is a Lodestone?
The first naturally occurring magnetic rock, which is also a permanent magnet.
What is a Permanent Magnet?
A magnet that is always magnetic.
How is somethings magnetic force described?
An object’s magnetism is referred to as magnetically hard or magnetically soft.
What are some Hard and Soft Magnets?
Iron is a soft magnet while cobalt and nickel are hard ones.
What is the difference between Hard and Soft magnets?
Harder magnets lose their magnetism much more slowly compared to soft magnets.
How do Magnetic Poles react to eachother?
Opposite poles attract each other while like ones repel each other.
What are the two Poles of a magnet?
North and South.
What is a Magnetic Field?
A region where a magnetic force can be detected.
What is a Geographic Pole?
The true North and South poles of the earth.
What is strange about compasses when they point north?
They don’t actually point to our Geographic North Pole, they point to our Magnetic North Pole which is in Northern Canada.
How do Compasses work?
By tracking magnetic fields.
