Sound Flashcards
What is a Sound Wave?
A longitudinal wave caused by vibration that requires a medium to travel.
What does the Speed of a Sound Wave depend on?
A medium. The closer together something’s particles are, the faster the sound will travel.
What is Loudness determined by?
Loudness is determined by intensity.
What is Sound measured in?
Decibels.
What is the Range of human hearing?
20hz->20kHz and 0+ decibels. After about 120db, you start feeling pain.
What is Pitch and what is it determined by?
The pitch of a sound is determined by its frequency.
What is Infrasound?
Slow vibrations of frequencies lower than 20 Hz.
What is Ultrasound?
Any sound wave with frequencies higher than 20 kHz.
What is Fundamental Frequency?
The frequency of something’s vibrations.
What is a Harmonic?
Whole-number multiples of a frequency.
What is Resonance?
A phenomenon where two objects naturally vibrate at the same frequency.
What are the three main regions of the ear?
The inner, the middle, and the outer.
What are the three small bones of the middle ear?
The hammer, anvil, and the stirrup.
What is the Basilar Membrane?
A long flexible membrane that has different natural frequencies in different parts of it.
What is Sonar?
The use of sound to measure how deeps underwater something is.
