Earthquakes and Volcanoes Flashcards
What is the Focus?
The area along a fault where the first motion of an earthquake occurs.
What is the Epicenter?
The point on Earth’s surface directly above an earthquake’s focus.
What types of waves do Earthquakes make?
Transverse and Longitudinal.
What are Surface Waves?
A seismic wave that only moves through solids.
What is Seismology?
The study of earthquakes based on their origin, propagation, energy, and prediction.
What is a Seismograph?
A device that measures shaking in the earth.
What is the Richter Scale?
A scale that expresses the magnitude of an earthquake.
What is a Vent?
An opening at the surface of the Earth where volcanic material passes.
What are the three types of Volcanoes?
Shield, Composite, and Cinder Cone.
What is a Shield Volcano?
A gently sloping, small volcano.
What is a Composite Volcano?
A taller type of volcano which has more flowy lava.
What is a Cinder Cone Volcano?
The tallest type of volcanoes, there have steep sides made of cinder.
Where are most Volcanoes located geographically?
They are located on convergent plate boundaries.
What is the Ring of Fire?
A large ring of convergent boundaries that a lot of volcanoes sit on.
Where do underwater Volcanoes form?
On divergent plate boundaries.
