Earth's Interior and Plate Tectonics Flashcards
What is the Crust?
The thin and solid outermost layer of Earth above the Mantle.
What is the Mantle?
The layer of rock between Earth’s crust and core.
What is the Core?
The center part of Earth below the mantle.
What is the hottest part of the Earth?
The core, it is made of extremely hot metal.
What is Plate Tectonics?
The study of the movement of the continents by large underground plates.
What is Pangea?
All of the Continents merged together, it used to be this way before the land mass split up to the way it is today.
What is Continental Drift?
The idea that the Continents are moving.
What is the Lithosphere?
A layer made of the Crust and the upper portion of the Mantle.
What is one theory on the reason that the Plates move?
It is theorized that they move because of a layer mode up of hot liquid called the Asthenosphere.
What is Magma?
Liquid rock produced under the Earth’s surface.
What is a Divergent Boundary?
A place where two plates move apart, making a gap.
What is Subduction?
The moving of a Tectonic plate below another plate.
What is a Fault?
A crack in Earth created when rocks on either side of a break move.
What is a Convergent Boundary?
The overlapping of plates moving together that causes mountains to form.
What is a Divergent Boundary?
The spreading apart of plates that causes large gaps, these are later filled by magma.
