The Moon Flashcards
How long is the lunar cycle?
27 days to orbit the earth
Phases of the moon
-New moon
-Waxing crescent
-First quarter half moon
-Waxing gibbous
-Full moon
-Waning gibbous
-Last quarter half moon
-Waning crescent
What is a lunar eclipse?
When the earth casts a shadow across the entire full moon
What is a solar eclipse?
When the moon passes directly in front of the sun
What is the umbra?
Area of shadow caused by earth blocking all of the light from the sun
What is the penumbra?
Area of shadow caused by the earth blocking some of the light from the sun
How are seasons caused?
Seasons are caused by the earth’s tilt on its own axis as it rotates around the son in its orbit.
How does the Earth’s tilt affect the earth?
Earth’s tilt is rotating at a 90 degree angle
-Changes length of day
-Changes the angle at which sunlight hits the ground throughout the year
-Determines seasons
What are the benefits of spaceflight
-Extending our knowledge of stars, galaxies and the universe
-Water purification methods developed to help humans live off earth for long periods of time. Used for emergency situations on earth
-Development of new technology, e.g. solar panels
Hazards of spaceflight
-Rocket lift-off is dangerous
-Expensive
-Micro-meteorites and space debris scatter everywhere throughout space at high speeds. They can cause significant damage to anything it collides with
-Negative affects on the health of the astronaut, e.g. Constant noise and light on the spacecraft can affect sleeping patterns
