Photosynthesis & Respiration Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
It is the chemical process in which the way plants make their own food, using sunlight.
Write out the chemical equation for photosynthesis
Sunlight
6CO2 + 6H20 → 6C6H12O6 + 6O2
Chlorophyll
Describe the process of photosynthesis
The chlorophyll in chloroplasts absorb light from the sun, creating energy.
Glucose is made using this energy, from the carbon dioxide, that enters through the stomata, and water (absorbed from the soil in the xylem vessel).
List 6 adaptations of the leaf for photosynthesis
~Very thin- cells are never far away from light
~Very broad- leaves have lots of space to trap the most amount of sunlight
~Cells containing the most chloroplasts are found in the upper layers of the leaf
~Air spaces- allow carbon dioxide to move quickly onto the cell and oxygen to quickly leave the cell
~Veins- the veins in the leaves bring water from the soil into the leaf and carry food away to all the other parts of the plant
~Stomata
What are stomata?
tiny pores in the leaf that allow carbon dioxide to enter the leaf and allow oxygen and water vapour to exit the leaf
What factors affect photosynthesis?
- water
- carbon dioxide
- light
- chlorophyll
Explain (using a diagram) an experiment that shows how something affects photosynthesis
the experiment investigating the influence of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis
What is respiration?
the release of energy from food
What is the chemical equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → Energy + 6CO2 + 6H2O.
Where does aerobic respiration occur?
In the mitochondrion
What are the waste products of aerobic respiration?
water and carbon dioxide
Describe the process of aerobic respiration
Glucose combines with oxygen, causing a release of energy.
What are the waste products of anaerobic respiration?
lactic acid
What are the waste products of anaerobic respiration in yeast?
alcohol and carbon dioxide
Describe the process of anaerobic respiration
When we exercise, the rate of respiration increases because we need more energy.
However, our breathing rate can’t keep up with the demand for oxygen.
This causes anaerobic respiration to occur, in addition to aerobic respiration.
What are the functions of roots?
- anchors and supports the plant in the soil
- absorbs water and minerals from the soil
What are the functions of the stem?
- supports and holds up the leaves and flowers
- transports water and minerals from the roots to the leaves
- transports food from the leaves to the rest of the plant
- some store food
What are the functions of the bud?
- potential growth point
- new leaves or flowers may develop here
What are the functions of the flower?
- produce seeds so that the plant can reproduce
- attracts insects
- provide nectar
What are the functions of the leaf?
- make food and oxygen (photosynthesis)
- allows gases and water vapour to pass in and out
What are xylem and phloem tissue?
xylem- transports water
phloem- transports food
What is the word equation for Photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll
Carbon dioxide + water -> Glucose + Oxygen
Sunlight
What is the word equation for Respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen -> Energy + Carbon Dioxide + Water
