Rates of Reaction Flashcards
What is a rate of reaction?
Describes how quickly a chemical reaction happens
What is collision theory
Chemical reactions can only happen if reactant particles collide with enough energy.
-The more frequently particles collide, and the greater the porportion of collisions with enough energy, the greater the rate of reaction.
What must reactants do for a reaction to occur?
-Collide with one another
-Have enough energy in the collision to form a product.
What factors affect rate of reaction?
- surface area
- Concentraion
- Temperature
- Catalyst
How does surface area affect rates of reaction?
The smaller the particle size the faster the reaction.
Why? smaller particles have a larger surface area.
How does temperature affect rates of reaction?
Increase in heat causes rate of reaction to increase.
-Heat causes atoms to move faster and are more likely to collide effectively to form a product.
How does Catalyst affect ROR?
Substance that increases rate of reaction without being used up itself.
How does concentration affect ROR?
Higher concentrations have a higher rate of reaction.
-The more particles present, the more like a reaction(collision) will occur.
