Micro organisms Flashcards
What are micro-organisms?
small organisms that can only be seen with a microscope and are invisible to the naked eye
What are the benefits of bacteria?
-They make antibiotics, e.g. streptomycin
-Lactobacillus, a type of bacteria, is used to convert milk to cheese and yoghurt
-They make vitamins B and vitamins K
What are the harmful effects of bacteria?
-They cause diseases, e.g. strep throat
-They can cause food poisoning
-Causes milk to go sour
-Causes crop diseases
Is bacteria multicellular or unicellular?
unicellular
Name the 3 basic shapes of bacteria
Give examples
- Round, e.g. pneumonia
- Rod, e.g. tuberculosis
- Spiral, e.g. cholera
What are the benefits of viruses?
-Makes vaccines
-A special virus provides heat resistance to some plants growing in a hot environment
-Cowpox virus protects against smallpox
-Bacteriophages destroy bacteria invading the body
What are the harmful effects of viruses?
-Causes the common cold, influenza, warts, HIV and AIDS
-Causes potato mosaic disease
-Causes rabies, foot and mouth disease
Give an example of a virus
-Rabies
-Influenza
-HIV
-AIDS
Name a type of bacteria and the disease it causes
⇒E.Coli - Food poisoning
⇒Salmonella - food poisoning
⇒Listeria - listeriosis

What are the benefits of fungi?
-Yeast is used to make alcohol and bread
-Penicillin is used to make antibiotics
-We can eat some mushrooms
What are the harmful effects of Fungi?
-They cause diseases such as ringworm and athlete’s foot
-Many mushrooms are poisonous
-Bread mould and fruit mould cause food spoilage
What is a pathogen?
a disease-causing micro-organism
What is microbiology?
The study of microscopic organisms known as micro-organisms
What is a mutation?
A change in the DNA in the cell of a living organism
Bacterial mutations can lead to antibiotic resistance
