Materials Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest part of an elrment
What is matter?
Anything that has mass or takes up space
Name the changes of state and the states they change to and from?
-Melting: solid to liquid
-Freezing: Liquid to solid
-Sublimation: solid to gas
-Condensation: gas to liquid
-Evaporation: liquid to gas
-Boiling: liquid to gas
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be split up into simpler substances by chemical means.
Contain one type of atom
What is a compound?
Substance made of two or more elements combined together, chemically
What is a mixture?
Consists of two or more different substances mingled with each other, but not chemically combined
What are the properties of metal?
-Good conductor of heat
-Good conductor of electricity
-Shiny (lustrous)
-Malleable and ductile
-High density
Properties of a non-metal?
-Poor conductor of heat
-Poor conductor of electricity
-Dull
-Brittle
-Low density
What does ductile mean?
Can be drawn into a wire
What does Malleable mean?
Can be hammered and moulded into a thin sheet
What does brittle mean?
Can break or snap when a lot of pressure is applied to it
What is a physical change?
When atoms form in a new way to give us a mixture, but do not create a new substance.
Can be reversed, e.g. ice to water
What is a chemical change?
When atoms arrange in a way to give us anew substance called a compound.
Cannot be reversed, e.g. firework exploding
What is the law of conservation of mass?
Total mass we have before reaction must equal the total mass after reaction
