The Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the function of the circulatory system?
-Carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body
-Carries nutrients from the small intestine to the rest of the body
-Carries heat around the body
-Removes waste
-White blood cells fight infections
What are the functions of blood?
-Blood transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, food and waste
-Blood transports heat to maintain a constant body temperature
-Prevents infections, fights disease and clots blood
What are the components of blood?
-Plasma
-Red blood cells
-White blood cells
-Platelets
What is the function of plasma?
Transports food oxygen and heat
What is the function of red blood cells?
Carries oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body
What is the function of white blood cells?
Attack and kill harmful bacteria and viruses and fight diseases
What is the function of platelets?
Helps form blood clots
What are the types of blood vessels?
-Vein
-Artery
-Capillary
What is the function of arteries?
Carry blood away from the heart
a for artery, a for away
What is the adaptation of arteries?
Thick muscular and elastic walls to carry high blood pressure
What is the function of veins?
Carry blood to the heart
What is the function of capillaries?
Join together into veins
What is the adaptation of veins?
Thin walls because blood is at low pressure.
They have valves to stop backflow
What is the adaptation of capillaries
They are one cell thick so that oxygen and nutrients can pass through to the body’s cells
What side is the vena cava on?
right
