Acids and Bases Flashcards
What is an acid?
A substance that tastes sour, and turns litmus red.
It is corrosive
What are everyday acid examples?
Vinegar, lemon juice, fizzy drinks.
What are lab acids?
Hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid
What is an indicator
a substance that changes color in the presence of an acid or a base
What is the pH scale?
A scale that indicates the acidity or basicity of a substance ranging from 0-14
What does an acid range from on the pH scale?
0-6
What does an base range from on the pH scale?
8-14
What is neutral on the pH scale?
7
What is neutralisation?
When you mix an acid and a base, they react with each other and neutralise/cancel each other out.
This makes the substance harmless.
What is titration?
A type of investigation that is used to find the concentration of an acid or base.
What is a burette?
A piece of equipment that is used to hold and measure volumes.
In titrations, it usually holds the acid
(a for above, a for acid)
What is a pipette?
Piece of equipment used to measure accurately a fixed volume of liquid .
Usually measures amount of base in titrations
What are examples of everyday bases?
Toothpaste
gaviscon
milk of magnesia
What are examples of laboratory bases?
Sodium hydroxide NaOH
Limewater Ca(OH)₂
