The Lymphatic System Flashcards
what is the lymphatic system
it’s a one way system of vessels that return excess tissue fluid to the blood.
the liquid in the vessels is called lymph
lymph nodes where
tonsils
thyroid gland
spleen
lymph nodes
formation of lymph
- fluid called tissue fluid surrounds all cells of the body
- tissue fluid acts as an exchange medium for the cells
- tissue fluid is continuously being formed as fluid is forced out or blood plasma in capillaries as the arteriole side.
- to prevent swelling, the excess fluid must return to the blood.
- excess tissue fluid drains into lymph vessels and is now called lymph
lymph is made up of
tissue fluid
white blood cells
proteins
fats
tissue fluid is made of
plasma
water
protein
gases
ions
glucose
movement of lymph
lymph is slowly moved through vessels by:
- Muscular walls of the vessels
- General body movements pressing on the vessels
Role of valves
valves ensure that lymph can only flow in one direction
where is lymph emptied back into the blood
its emptied back into blood at the SUBCLAVIAN VEINS in the NECK
lymph nodes definition
lymph nodes are dwellings found along lymph vessels
found in clusters in areas such as tonsils , neck, groin, spleen etc
what do lymph nodes do?
mature and store large numbers of lymphocytes (WBC)
filter bacteria
use lymphocytes to kill pathogens
Functions of lymph
- to collect excess tissue fluid and return it to the blood
- to defend the body against infection by: (on other flashcard)
- to absorb and transport fats in the digestive system
- to help with hearing and balance inner ear
how does it defend the body against infection ????
filtering out micro organisms in lymph nodes
maturing and storing lymphocytes
destroying micro organisms
