Photosynthesis Flashcards
Equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Role of photosynthesis
To provide food and oxygen for all organisms
Light stage occurs in…
The granum of the chloroplast
Needs light
Dark stage occurs in…
The stroma of the chloroplast
Chlorophyll is
Green pigment in chloroplast
Function of chlorophyll
Absorbs light
Chloroplast is
Where photosynthesis takes place
Contains chlorophyll
Light Stage — Pathway 1
- Electrons are passed along an electron transport chain
- Energy released and used to make ATP
ADP + P + energy —> ATP (goes to dark stage to make glucose) - Electrons return to chlorophyll
Names for pathway 1
Cyclic photo phosphorylation
Cyclic electron flow
Light Stage — Pathway 2
- Energised electrons are passed to NADP+ and form NADP-
- NADP- combines with H+ (from a proton pool) to form NADPH
- Photolysis: H2O is split into H+, E- and O2
- Energy from electrons used to make ATP
End products of light stage:
ATP
NADPH
H2O (split) (H, O, E-)
Where do the end products of the light stage go?
ATP and NADPH are used in the dark stage
O2 is used in plant respiration or released into the air
Dark stage name
Calvin cycle
Necessities for dark stage
Stroma
Enzyme controlled
Temperature (25°C)
No light needed
Needs NADPH (for H ions) and ATP (for energy)
The dark stage
