Global network of millions of interconnected computers and networks
World’s largest client-server network
What is protocol?
Rules by which a network is going to operate.
What is packet?
Means by which information is transmitted
- Contains a header, routing information, length, originating info.
What is the most heavily used internet feature in organizations? What are their components?
EMAIL:
1) Mail servers- Hosts that deliver, forward and store mail
2) Clients- link users to servers. Allow you to read, compose, send, and store email
TCP breaks up sent messages into IP packets
- Sent to a router
URL- Uniform resource locator
What is IMPA?
Internet message Access Protocal- Access to remote mailboxes as if they were local
What is FTP
? Uploading and downloading files
What is IM?
Informal internal communications (instant message)
What is VOIP?
Internet based phone communications
What is markup (or Tagging) languages?
Code that indicate how parts of a file are to be processed or displayed
what is html?
Core markup language- way of tagging text for display
What is xml?
Mark up language- tagging documents in machine readable form
What is XBRL?
For encoding and tagging financial information
- Used in filings with SEC on EDGAR
What is packet sniffers?
Packet sniffers (view and capture sent information)

What is intranet?
Available only within an organization
Intranets are often used to connect geographically separate LANS within a company
What is an extranet?
Extend intranet to associates
- Suppliers, customers, business partners
- Extend beyond the company “firewall”
