Computer Networks and Data Communication Flashcards
What is computer network?
Two or more computing devices connected by communication Chanels
What is a node?
network access point
- Controlling nodes is crital to security
- Measure of network complexity
- Each node is assigned a DNS and IP (internet protocol address)
- Network monitors display node activity- status, extent of traffic, alarms
What are components of computer networks?
Switch and/or router (router is more complex and reliable, thus more popular). Routers are smarter, more expensive than switches.
What are Network Interface Cards (NIC) (or network Adapter Card (NAC)
Circuit board and software on each node
Matched to transmission media
What is transmission media?
Communication link between nodes (cable, wireless)
What is client node?
usually an end users microcomputer
Uses but does not provide network services
What is a server node?
Provides services or resources to network
- End-users access server resources but generally don’t use directly (remotely)
What is LAN (local area network?
LANS- USE DEDICATED LINES
- USE DEDICATED COMMUNICATION LINES
- LANDS (DEDICATED)
What are WANS
Use SHARED LINES
Telephone lines, cable lines
What is SAN?
Storage Area Networks
Connected storage devices to servers and other devices
Centralized data storage network
Increase use in cloud computing
What is a PAN?
Created/used by individual person
Bluetooth, iPad to keyboard, headset, mouse
Why do we have networks?
We want to share data files
Printing
Remote access
Directories
What is wired communicated media?
Originally for telephone connections
Historically slowest, least secure, lowest capacity, most interference of wired media
What is coaxial cable?
Cable for wired cable TV system
Faster, more secure, higher capacity
Slightly higher cost, common due to cable TV systems
What is fiber optic cable?
Faster and secure, high capacity
Light pulses not elect, no electrical interference
More expensive
