The Hip - Muscles Flashcards
Iliacus muscle
Proximal; upper 2/3 of iliac fossa
Distal; lesser trochanter (blends with psoas major tendon)
Action; Flexor of the hip
Inn: Femoral nerve (L02-L03)
Psoas
Proximal; transverse processes and bodies of all lumbar vertebrae.
Distal; lesser trochanter
Action; Flexor of the thigh
Inn; Branches from L1-L4
Tensor fascia latae
Proximal ; Anterior Superior Iliac Spine
Distal ; iliotibial band
Action ; tenses fascia latae, abductor and internal rotator of thigh.
Inn ; Superior gluteal nerve (L04-S01)
Gluteus maximus
posterior iliac crest area to IT tract and gluteal tuberosity
Inn ; inferior gluteal nerve (L5-S2)
Piriformis
Proximal ; front of sacrum
Distal ; upper border of greater trochanter
Action ; External rotation, abduction, and extension of the hip joint. Help stabilise the hip
Inn ; sacral plexus L05-S02
Inferior gemellus
ischial tuberosity to greater trochanter
Action ; Lateral hip rotator, adduction and extensor of hip joint.
Inn. L05, S01
Obturator internus
internal obturator formamen to lesser greater trochanter tobercle
innerv: obturator internus
Pectineus
Superior pubic ramus and pubic tubercle > pectineal line and line aspera, just below the minor trochanter.
Adductor longus
superior pubic ramus and pubic symphysis > middle third of linea aspera
Inn. obturator nerve (L2-L4)
Adductor magnus
ischial tuberosity and inferior pubic ramus > adductor tubercle and linea aspera
Inn. obturator nerve (linea aspera inserting part), and tibial part of sciatic nerve (adductor tubercle inserting part)
Adductor minimus
mostly fused with adductor magnus - inferior pubic rams > middle part line aspera
Inn. obturator nerve (L2-L4)
Rectus femoris
anterior inferior iliac spine > patella (tibial tuberosity)
Inn. all parts femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Vastus lateralis
lateral area of major trochanter, intertrochanteric line, gluteal tuberosity and lateral aspect of the line aspera > like rectus
Inn. all parts femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Vastus intermedius
Anterior femur shaft surface > like rectus
Inn. all parts femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Vastus medialis
medial aspect of line aspera > like rectus
Inn. all parts femoral nerve (L2-L4)
