Brachial Plexus Flashcards
what are the roots of the brachial plexus?
C5 C6
C7
C8 T1
what are the trunks of the brachial plexus?
superior is formed by C5 C6
middle trunk is formed by C7
inferior trunk is formed by C8 T1
what is the gross anatomy of the brachial plexus?
roots, trunks, divisions, cords
what happens after the trunks?
the trunks divide into anterior and posterior divisions
what do the anterior and posterior divisions create?
the CORDS
Lateral
Posterior
Medial
what part of brachial plexus is behind the clavicle ?
the divisions
What also runs alongside the brachial plexus (cords)?
Axillary artery and vein which are enclosed in the axillary sheath
what part of brachial plexus is behind in the axilla ?
the cords
how is the posterior cord formed?
From ALL posterior branches of the three divisions
what does the axillary artery runs into (medially)
the subclavian artery
What does the median nerve innervate?
all the flexors in the forearm except the flexor carpi ulnaris and the flexor digitorum profundus.
In the hand (palmar aspect) it innervates 1st/ 2nd lumbricals, and the thenar eminence. Nail beds.
Only nerve that goes through the carpal tunnel.
what nerve comes off the root of C5?
dorsal scapular nerve
Inn. Rhomboids
what nerve comes off roots of C5 C6 C7?
Long thoracic nerve
Inn. serratus anterior muscle
what two nerves come off the Superior trunk?
Suprascapular nerve -
Inn. supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles.
* supplies nerves that ‘sit on top’ of scapula - suprascapular
Subclavius nerve -
Inn. subclavius muscle
What trunks/ divisions make up the lateral cord?
C5 C6 - anterior division of superior trunk
C7 - anterior division of middle trunk
