The heart and Circulation Flashcards
What kind of circulatory system does the heart have? Advantages?
- Double.
- Blood travels through the heart twice:
- Travels rapidly to the body cells + delivering the oxygen the body needs.
What is the heart + What is it’s function?
- Organ.
- Consists of many muscle tissues.
- Function:
- Pump blood all around the body.
Structure 1 of the heart: 4 Chambers.
- Top= Left Atrium + Right Atrium.
- Bottom= Left Ventricle + Right Ventricle.
- ## Atria are separated from the ventricles by valves.
Feature 1 of the heart Vena Cava (Left Passage).
- Brings deoxygenated blood from the lower body to the heart.
What does the pulmonary artery do?
- Blood passes from the heart to the lungs in the pulmonary artery.
What does the pulmonary veins do?
- Oxygenated blood passes from the lungs to the heart in the pulmonary vein.
What does the aorta do? (next to pulmonary artery).
- Oxygenated blood is pumped from the heart to the body in the aorta.
Pattern of blood flow from the heart;
1) Blood enters the left and right atrium.
2) Atria contracts and blood is forced into the ventricles.
3) Ventricles contract and blood is forced out of the heart.
4)
What is the purpose of the valves?
- Stops blood from flowing backwards into the atria when the ventricles contract.
Why does left side of heart has a thicker muscular wall than right?
- Left Ventricle pumps blood around the entire body.
- ## So needs to provide a greater force.
What is the coronary artery?
- Branch out of the aorta.
- Spread out into heart muscle.
- Purpose: provide oxygen to the muscle cells of the heart.
- Oxygen is used in respiration for muscle contractions.
What is a pace maker?
- Peacemakers control the natural resting heart rate.
- ## Found in right atrium.
What happens if a persons pace maker stops working correctly?
- Doctors can implant an artificial pacemaker.
- Small electrical device.
- Corrects inregularities in the heart rate.
