Diffusion: Flashcards
1
Q
What is diffusion?
A
- Spreading out of particles resulting in a net movement from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
2
Q
Diffusion of Oxygen:
A
- Cells need oxygen for respiration which is carried out by the mitochondria.
- The concentration of oxygen is higher outside of the cell as it is being transported in the blood from the lungs.
- The concentration is lower outside of the cell.
Travels from an area of high concentration to low concentration.
3
Q
Diffusion of Carbon Dioxide:
A
- Respiration produces the waste gas of carbon dioxide.
- Higher concentration of co2 inside of the cell then outside of the cell.
- ## Co2 moves out of the cell by diffusion.
4
Q
Diffusion of Urea:
A
- Waste product produced in cells.
-Diffuses out of the cell into the blood plasma and is excreted by the kidneys.
-
5
Q
What is the difference in concentration called?
A
- Concentration Gradient.
- Greater the concentration Gradient= faster diffusion takes place.
6
Q
How does temperature affect the rate of diffusion?
A
- Higher temperature= Greater rate of diffusion.
- ## Particles have more kinetic energy + Moving faster.
7
Q
How does the surface area of the membrane affect the rate of diffusion?
A
- Greater the surface area=Higher rate of diffusion.
