The Heart Flashcards
what is the heart
is one giant muscle (muscular organ)
where is it positioned
behind the sternum in the chest cavity between the lungs
Aorta
the main artery leaving the left ventricle
coronary artery
run along the external of the heart and provide the muscle with oxygenated blood
coronary veins
take blood away
walls of the heart are made up with
cardiac muscle and divided into 4 chambers
two upper chambers
atria
two lower chambers
ventricles
blood cannot be pushed backward why?
because there are two valves in the heart
what are valves
are flaps of membrane and these are knows as the atrio-ventricular valves
what valve is on the right side of the heart
tri-cuspid valve, prevents blood from going from the right ventricle to the right atrium
what valve is on the left side
the bi-cuspid or mitral valve
what are valves responsible for
the back flow for the blood travelling in one direction
what are the 2 types of cuspid valves
the bi and tri-cuspid valves
what do tendinae do
hold valves in place - valves are flaps that can open and close
