Scientific method (10) Flashcards
research question
Scientists develop a question about a problem. They need to be very specific in defining what they are trying to explain or solve.
Aim
ALWAYS START YOUR AIM WITH: • To investigate….
• To test …..
• To determine …..
what you as the scientist wish to achieve
hypothesis
what you think the answer is based upon your knowledge gathered information and prior - an TO SUM UP: educated guess • A suggested solution to the problem. • Must be • Sometimes written as testable If...Then... statements • Predicts an outcome
method
- A procedure to test the hypothesis.
- Develop and follow a procedure.
- Include a detailed materials list.
- The outcome must be measurable (quantifiable).
how do we make it valid
A fair test is when we keep everything the same except the variable. (one thing we change)
how do we make it more reliable
- By REPEATING the investigation several times
* To get an AVERAGE
observations
A key to experiments is observing what happens and writing it down.
– It may be charts, graphs, photographs or written work.
conclusion
The answer to the hypothesis based on the data obtained from the experiment
look back at the hypothesis to see if you’re okay
share your findings
Because they share their experiments and findings, scientists can learn from each other and often use someone else’s experiences to help them with what they are studying or doing
