The different types of external bleeding Flashcards
Arterial bleeding
blood flow originating in an artery. the blood is typically bright red to yellowish in colour due to high degree of oxygenation. typically exits in spurts and the loss can be copious + can occur very rapidly. (large wall, narrow lumen)
Venous bleeding
flowing from a damaged vein, blackish in colour due to lack of oxygen. will flow in a steady manner but can still be quite substantial + can occur with surprising speed without intervention (Narrow wall + large lumen)
Capillary bleeding
occurs in superficial wounds such as abrasions. colour may vary as distal portion of circulation with oxygenated + un-oxygentated blood mixing. will generally ooze in small amounts as opposed to flowing or spurting. (narrow wall + narrow lumen)
