Fainting Flashcards
What is it?
caused by a short term reduction in blood pressure to the brain - meaning, the cells of the brain are not able to get enough oxygen from the blood to function properly + the person may lose consciousness
Why does this happen?
anxiety/fear, low blood pressure, dehydration or postural hypotension (getting up too quickly)
Signs
pale + clammy, weak pulse, shivering pupils dilate + loss of consciousness
Symptoms
feeling faint, dizzy, light headed, sick + complain of feeling hot, pt feels giddy
Action
immediately lay pt flat with legs raised above their head to increase the flow of blood to the heart + brain. Loosen any tight clothing. if they do not regain consciousness immediately once in this position, dial 999
