Splinters
are common DIY injuries which carries risk of infection as they are generally small but unclean shards or wood, metal or glass. They can be easy to remove using following advice:
1.
ensure you maintain your infection control by washing your hands and putting on PPE
2.
gently clean the area around the splinter with warm water + soap
3.
use tweezers to grasp the splinter as lose to the skin as possible + draw out in a straight line in same direction it entered the skin, making sure it doesn’t break off
4.
carefully squeeze the wound to encourage a small drop of blood to flush out remaining dirt
5.
clean + dry the wound + cover with a plaster or other dressing
Advice
never try + probe the splinter with an object or you may introduce infection.
if the splinter if too deeply embedded or remove or it lies over a joint then seek medical help
if you are unsure if you are covered for tetanus, check with your GP
