Circulatory system Flashcards
What is it?
an enclosed group of blood vessels with the heart at the centre its purpose is it circulate blood around the body
- main component of the system is the heart which is a muscular pumping organ in the thorax (chest cavity) connected by blood vessels to every tissue in the body.
The heart
has 4 chambers, the upper 2 are called atria + the lower 2 are called ventricles
The chambers
are separated by one way valves that allow flow from atria + ventricles only.
the two sides of the heart are separated completely
How it works
Deoxygenated blood is collected from the whole body through the veins + transported to the right atrium via the inferior + superior vena cavae
2.
As the heart beats, it pumps blood through the valve into the right ventricle + then out of the ventricle into the pulmonary artery where it passes to the lungs for re-oxygenation.
3.
Once oxygenated, the blood returns through arteries to the left atrium through the pulmonary vein then down into the left ventricle + finally out of the heart via the aorta to the rest of the body to re-oxygenate the body’s cells + tissue
