What are the key assumptions?
-assumes there are systematic changes that occur in development of human behaviour from conception to death
-behaviour may be learned (nurture) of innate (nature)
- early childhood experiences can affect behaviour and later development (nurture)
-development may happen in predetermined stages (nature)
what does the developmental area attempt to understand?
changes that occur in a persons life which mostly occur in childhood
what are the strengths of the developmental area?
-holistic- considers nature and nurture, more valid, shows complexity of life
-help us positively influence children’s behaviour, positive reinforcement- chaney correct use of inhaler, Bandura- demonstrate influence of aggressive behaviour. understanding can lead to film certificates to reduce negative impact of media violence in young audiences
-improve understanding of different people at ages and stages of development
weaknesses of developmental area?
-ethical issues, informed consent in children, possible psychological harm- bandura
-some aspects hard to study scientifically, lacks reliability, Bandura assumes the behaviour tithe Bobo doll was aggressive but children may of just been playing
