Biological area Flashcards
what are the key assumptions of the bio area?
-behaviour is caused by our biology and the way our body works
-all thoughts, feelings, emotions have a physiological cause
-psychology is a science and should be studies through lab experiments
what is a genotype and a phenotype?
g= organisms genetic makeup
p= organisms physical characteristics
what are neurones?
cells specialised to receive, transmit and process info to other cells
what are nerves?
bundles of neurons
what is the myelin sheath?
protects and insulates areas of axon helping to speed up neural impulses
what is the frontal lobe?
supresses socially inappropriate behaviour, predicts consequences, choice between good and bad actions
what is the temporal lobe?
interpretation of sound
recognition of objects
visual memory
what is the parietal lobe?
interpretation of touch
understand objects, shape, space
what is the occipital lobe?
makes sense of visual information
what is the cerebellum?
balance and motor skills
what is the brainstem?
transfer of info
what are strengths of the biological area?
extremely scientific in measuring behaviour and brain activity (psych as a science)
real life applications to help investigate brain behaviour (brain scanning) understand brain injuries
what are weaknesses of the biological area?
reductionist focuses on genes and brain structure to explain complex behaviour
typically lacks ecological validity due to artificial conditions and measurements
