The brain test 2 Flashcards
The Central Nervous System (CNS)
Peripheral nervous system:
Somatic nervous system-
Autonomic nervous system-
consists of the brain and spinal cord.
(Contains 90% of the body’s neurons; processes information and controls behavior, thoughts, and movements.)
Connects the CNS to the rest of the body.
Handles body movements and external environment.
Transmits information to/from internal organs and glands.
3 layers of the human brain:
Central Core-
Limbic System-
Cerebral Hemispheres-
structures in the Central Core (5)
medulla
pons
cerebellum
thalamus
hypothalamus
structures in the Limbic System (2)
hippocampus
Amygdala
structures in the cerebral hemispheres (4)
(Accounts for 80% of the brain’s weight and contains 70% of the neurons in the CNS.)
optical lobe
parietal lobe
temporal lobe
frontal lobe
MICROelectrode Techniques
Used to study activity of a single neuron
Very small electrodes inserted into individual neurons
MACROelectrode Techniques
Used to get a picture of overall activity in the brain
EX: EEG- which uses electrodes placed on a person’s scalp to measure brain activity
Structural Imaging (2)
Computerized Axial Tomography (CT/CAT)
Uses X-rays to create a 3-dimensional image of the brain
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce images
Functional Imaging
EEG imaging
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) & Magnetic source imaging (MSI)
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) & Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT)
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
