Q

what happens when the Hippocampus gets damaged in humans and animals? (3)

A

The hippocampus is a part of the limbic system and it plays an important role in the formation of new memories.

People with severe damage of the hippocampus can still remember names, faces and events that they embedded in memory before they were injured, but cannot remember anything new.

Moreover, animals with damage in these areas fail to recognize where they have just been. They explore the same small part of their environment over and over again, as if it were constantly new to them.

Q

what happens when portions of the septum are electrically stimulated in both humans and animals? (2)

A

they experience heightened feelings of pleasure. In animals, for instance, they will press a bar that stimulates the septum repeatedly, even ignoring basic needs like food and water.

Humans also experience pleasure when certain areas of the septum are stimulated, although the intensity of the experience may not be as extreme as in animals. This stimulation is part of the limbic system, which is involved in processing emotions and pleasure.
