Test 1: 10 postpartum cow 1 Flashcards
chlamydiosis can cause — abortions when
sporadic
last trimester
* if infection late in gestation will give birth to weak calf
how does chlamydia abortus cause abortion
bacteria
* spread by feces, secretions and aborted material
* cause endometritis
* sporadic abortions in last trimester
* retained membranes
lesions causes by chlamydiosis appear where
intercotyledonary areas of the placenta
* the fetus will have ascites, edema and enlarged liver
campylobacteriosis sp venerialis is spread by — and causes abortion —
veneral disease
only 10% of the time, in first trimester
tritrichomoniasis infection can lead to —
pyometra
abortion is rare
how is campy or tritrich spread
veneral
males are lifelong asymp carriers
how does campy/tritrich effect females
- infection causes low grade endometritis
- this can cause abortion after maternal rec, inflammation will kill embryo
- female takes a long time to come back into estrus 25-90 days
- can fight off infection and eventually get pregnant
- immunity only lasts a year, and can get reinfected
- delayed pregnancy and increased interservice intervals
how to prevent campy/tritrich in cows
- AI- test and cull bulls if needed
- treat semen with antibiotics
- vaccinate
neosporosis causes — in cows
2nd term abortion- can cause abortion storm
* if calf survives can be infected by vertical transmission
tranmission of neosporosis
dog normal host, cow can spread by vertical transmission to its offspring
calves born with neosporosis infection present with
underweight and/or have neurological signs, including ataxia, impaired proprioception, or an inability to rise. Neurogenic flexion or hyperextension of the limbs may occur. Exophthalmia, asymmetry of the eyes, and hydrocephalus have also been reported.
However, most calves that are congenitally infected are clinically normal.
how to test for neosporosis
- serology- immunofluorescent antibody test
- ELISA
- cysts in neural tissue
how to treat neosporosis
no treatment
* test and cull
* decrease exposure to dog poop- prevent tranmission
bovine herpesvirus 1 causes
infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR)
infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV)
bovine herpes virus causes — abortions
4-8 months
IBR (infectious bovine rhinotrachetitis) presents as
caused by bovine herpes
* nasal and ocular discharge, coughing and trachypnea
* reduced appetite and weight loss
* Animals may become asymptomatic latent carriers directly after infection or after recovery from clinical illness.
IVP infectious pustular vulvovaginitis presents as
bovine herpes virus
* veneral disease
* symptoms 1-2 days post breeding
* ulcers on vaginal mucosa
* discomfort and straining
* resolves in 1-2 weeks
* similar lesions on bulls penis
fetus aborted from bovine herpes virus will present as
- severaly autolysed- liquefactive necrosis of kidney and focal in liver
- viral inclusion bodies
- PCR of liver to confirm
how to diagnosis bovine herpes virus
PCR
- of aborted fetal liver
- vaginal swabs
how to treat bovine herpes
vaccinate
* isolate and reduce stress
most common cause of mycotic abortion
aspergillus fumigatus
asperigillus fumigatus infection causes
late term abortion
how does cow get infected with aspergillus fumigatus infection
mold
* Infection might occur through respiratory tract, digestive tract, ascending via uterus, or udder.
* More common on housed animals and during the winter
* Spoiled feed is one of the most common causes.
fetus with aspergillus infection presents with
fetus- white lesions
placenta- both cotyledons and intercarunclar areas effected- necrosis and leathery
how to diagnosis aspergillus infection
mycotic/mold
* cause late term abortion
* fetus has white lesions
* fungus found in lesions
* culture- antifungal antibodies, metabolites and antigens in fetal fluids
how to treat aspergillous infection
mycotic/mold
* prevent spread of mold
* ↑ ventilation
* clean food
* antifungal treatments
